I heard it a million times - take your stool softeners...maybe even take more than suggested. I took what was prescribed, yet three weeks after surgery - BOOM - I landed in the ER with a bowel obstruction. Excuse the details, but even though I had bowel movements after surgery - I was still a victim of not taking enough stool softeners.

If you're on Percacet (OXY with Acetaminophen), or another Opioid --- stool softeners are a MUST!

After hours in the ER and a CT scan - the obstruction was found. I won't go into details, but relief was not easy. There was much pain involved, and I don't want anyone to go through this discomfort (Ha, discomfort is such a soft word for such a hard situation.

Take Miralax - twice a day - prune juice too. Colace as well.

Wishing you all well -- Eydie :)

A prescription laxative called Linzess is a major helper for people who must take opioid medications. My gastroenterologist recommended it highly after I developed an impaction, and I've found it excellent in combination with Senna tablets. Several days of experimentation were required before I dared to get more than a quick dash away from a toilet, but since then--I've been very pleased.

between toradol that gives you diarrhea and oxycotin that clogs you up, I’d say a nice balance! :) I do regularly take the stool softeners! reading your post double ensures that! thank you!

So sorry that you had to suffer through the bowel obstruction. In my opinion the healthcare providers do not emphasize enough the need to take Miralax, Colace, Magnesium Citrate, or other laxatives to prevent constipation. Not everyone has that problem with pain pills but a lot of us do. Hope you are now doing well in your knee healing journey.
