Its been 7 weeks since I had my double Knee replacements. The first two weeks were hell for me. No matter what I did, nothing helped the pain. I even was doubling up on my Norco Pain Meds which turned out to running out the end of the second week. My Dr said no refills. So it was all about Ibuprofen and Naproxen for me.
Bed time and waking up in the mornings were depressing for me having to face the pain. Eventually the days got better. I bought 10 x 20 ice packs which helped tremendously. I still have issues with any material rubbing against my incisions like blankets of any material or being able wear pants. Part of me is glad that I decided to do both knees at once. I don’t think I would of done the second knee after going through all that pain The pain is behind me except of course the stiffness, heaviness and the impatience of feeling normal again. I have pretty good ROM at this point, 120 degrees. My orthopedic Dr even suggested that I wouldn’t have to return to Physical Therapy if I didn’t want to because of the Coronavirus. I told him I still want to go to PT, I like to being accountable in order to keep getting better. I keep having to tell myself, “One Day at a Time”

Your story could be mine almost to a tee. But it’s been almost 6 months for me (I had bilateral TKR on Oct.1, 2019) and still the stiffness and heaviness and the feeling that rubber bands are wrapped around my knees are an issue. I’m also waiting for the feeling of being normal again. My flexion is great and PT went well. I still wake up to pain and stiffness in the morning but as soon as I get going the pain is ok. Stiffness happens when they are in one position for a period of time then trying to move. It’s still very frustrating. Dr. says everything looks good in the x-rays and I’m doing great. He says it can take up to a year to feel normal but I’m not sure if they will ever feel normal again. I still have pain going up and down stairs which is frustrating because that’s one of the reasons I had the surgery. So I’m still taking it one day at a time and hoping by the end of this year things will be much better. It was definitely a brutal surgery though and not for the faint of heart. I’m glad I did them both at the same time or I probably would not have done the second one.
